Be careful while eating apples

It is common for apple skin to cause very bad bloating and wind? Could it be the pectin, the skin or just the fibre content of the skin?

Apples and other foods can cause bloating and wind. The degree to which this happens and the foods that trigger it both vary from person to person.

The following foods commonly produce gas:

  • Dairy products (except yoghurt).
  • Vegetables such as brown beans, cauliflower, peas, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, and onions.
  • Bran and whole grains.
  • Fruits like pears, apples, and peaches.
  • Carbonated beverages, sparkling drinks, and beer.
  • Dried fruits.
  • Sugar substitutes in sugar-free foods and candies; for example, sorbitol.
The most probable cause is the fibre content. One thing that may give you some hope (if you want to keep eating apples) is that in the transition from a diet with a lower fibre content to one with a higher fibre content, it is very common to be a little windy! However, once the bacteria in the gut change in response to the continued consumption of a higher fibre diet, the windiness gradually goes away (usually).
